A YWAM DTS Daily Schedule
A Glimpse into the Day of a Marine Reach DTS Student
If you’ve ever wondered what life as a DTS student was actually like, you’ve come to the right place. Here we’ll go through a typical day for a typical DTS student so you can get a feel for what your days will look like when you get here. Enjoy!
- We have a productive morning routine where we prioritize quick and efficient cleaning, time set aside for Jesus, and if you’re up early enough, a tasty breakfast.
- Start the week off with Whanau time (family in Maori) which includes delicious baked goods, David Cowie’s (one of Marine Reach founders) cheesy jokes and fellowship. Other days at this time are substituted with prayer or worship.
- Every morning we have lectures where speakers from around the world teach on different topics. This time is more than simply sitting in a classroom; lectures are about engaging in discussion and ministry to help you personally grow in your relationship with Jesus.
- Living in community, there are always staff members around for prayer, support or even just hanging out. You will also be assigned a mentor to walk alongside you in the journey. This person will meet with you weekly to check in, help you meet your goals, answer any questions and pray with you.
- Beyond lectures, once a week all students break into their specific streams (whether it be Worship, Wild Heart, Go Pacific, etc.). In this time, you will learn more about your specific focus and the heartbeat behind the stream. For example, if you chose Medical Compassion, this would be a time to dive deeper into what medical missions look like.
- Twice a week students get the chance to serve and dedicate their afternoon to being a part of the base in what we call ministry placements. This includes helping out in the kitchen, hospitality, grounds, transport, registrar, or media.
- As well, biweekly, we have a time of evangelism where students get to grow and safely step out in their faith. It’s an opportunity to share outside in the community the love of Christ and the truth of the gospel. Good news is, no one is expected to be perfect, and leaders are there to help.
- Ministry Night. Wednesday nights are set aside to give the speaker extra time to teach, pray, worship and answer any questions we might have. It allows a space to reflect and process the things we’ve been learning throughout the week.
- There are places in the schedule to provide personal time with the Lord and free time in the afternoons to engage in sports, games, building relationships and explore the property (which could include swimming in our glorious waterfall). There is also time for town trips to get necessities, to visit the beach or to go to church on the weekends.

“SPHC was a transformational turning point in my faith walk where I learned to focus on others, serve, and honour others with my skills. Everything I learned in the course I put into practice to serve in the mission work that we were doing in Vanuatu. In changing me the Lord has changed my future and I walk with him and others in everything that I do.”
Paul Kerpel, 23, Alberta, Canada

“Being part of the Go Pacific Stream really opened my eyes to experiencing and living in other cultures, particularly that of the Māori and South Pacific. Being able to be so relational with others, a key part of their culture, meant that we could witness God move in peoples’ lives on such a personal level, which has impacted me ever since. It also helped me discover my heart for evangelism, encouraged me to step out in faith, and stirred a passion to share the life-changing love of God I came to know during this time.”
Emma Sear, 19, England

“Medical Compassion DTS was a truly an incredible experience. Working in health centres, hospitals and pop-up clinics grew my interest in medicine and allowed me to practically show the love of God. For me, the most transformational aspect of my Med-Com DTS was the focus on compassion and its importance in achieving true holistic healing. This is an experience like no other!”
Matthew Bassett, 18, Orewa, NZ

“Coming into prayer and passion I had so much passion and desires but did not know how to bring them to the feet of the Lord in prayer. Going through the journey of growing in prayer and discipline I was able to walk out with a passion and desire to take all that was on my heart to the foot of the cross in prayer. I found a love for that intimate time of prayer with the Lord in a way I haven’t known before!”
Beza Sparkes, 22, Ethiopia/Alaska

“Coming into DTS I already loved and had a heart for worship but over the course of the worship stream I discovered more and more who God was and what HE was and the impact worship has. Finishing DTS my love for God and my heart for worship is bigger than ever before and I found new and deeper intimacy with HIM.”
Andrea Wenger, 24, Switzerland

“In the Kingdom Come stream, we really focused on what the kingdom of God is and how to live that out on earth. The most impactful aspect of this was walking out a miraculous lifestyle and being in an intimate relationship with God, where you can expect miracles to happen.”
Peter Seip, 25, Virginia, USA

“Doing The Cover to Cover DTS at Marine Reach was one of the best things I’ve decided to do. Reading the Bible from Genesis to Revelation helped me see more of the different characteristics and nature of God. The Cover to Cover DTS was great. It taught me how to be diligent, manage my time properly, and helped me have a more sturdy foundation and in my beliefs. “
Talon Jernigan, 20, USA

“Before doing the Justice Movement stream I was so full of hatred and anger toward the perpetrators of human trafficking; completely lacking the love God has for them. But through the stream meetings and prayer it’s been a beautiful journey in which God has shown me how deep and vast His love is for ALL His children. God completely changed my view and I couldn’t be more thankful for this experience!”
Kara Spencer, 19, BC, Canada

“Coming into the medical compassion stream, I thought it would just be an addition to my medical experience. But after laying down my expectations I was able to grasp the essence of compassion through ministry, experiencing a new perspective on medicine. Choosing to serve in love, and taking the time to seek out and care for the one who need it most.”
Yekaterina Lukyanchina, 20, Russia/America

“Prayer and Passion completely changed my outlook on the true power that prayer has. It had always been something that I knew worked and I did, but it was boring. Being a part of this stream gave me new understanding of how prayer is worship and fuels the power of heaven connecting with earth. It will move you to a place of praying out of your relationship with the Lord rather than giving him a list of things you want. You will gain a newfound intimacy with God as your prayer life is propelled.”
Tilly Logan, 21, Australia
