Bible Devotional: Genesis and the Image of God
Bible Devotional: Genesis and the Image of God
Here at Marine Reach, we are passionate about Discipleship and about the Bible. Bible devotionals are amazing and different from Bible study, even if only in emphasis. In this blog, we will look at an example of reading the Bible devotionally, and we’ll also look at how Bible study can help us. This Bible devotional is all about the image of God and focuses on the first chapter of Genesis verses twenty-six through thirty.
Made in the Image of God
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.”
Reading the Bible Devotional
Now read the text again, maybe even a couple of times. Ask yourself “What does this mean? What does this say about who God is? Who am I according to this passage?”
After this, have a conversation with God about your thoughts (a.k.a. prayer).
Congratulations! You have now done a Bible devotional, but let us go a little deeper.
Going Deeper into the Image of God
The word in, in English, can denote different things as can the Hebrew word for in which is the letter beth. (For a dictionary definition check here.)
The apple is in the bag. (Describes location.)
I wrote the note in pen. (Describes what tool was used.)
The window broke in pieces. (Describes result)
I am in education. (Describes function.)
- A being made in the image of God is an example of the functional usage of the word.
A teacher is in education, regardless of whether they are a good or a bad teacher. The same can be said about humans being made in the image of God. Humans can image God either poorly or well but they are not more or less an image of God.
Now read the text again and see if anything new comes to mind. With this new meaning of being made in the image of God, what does this say about who God is? How does this affect how you live your life?
Here are some verses you might want to look at as well: 2 Corinthians 4:4, John 14:9b-10, Colossians 3:10, Romans 8:29, and 2 Corinthians 3:18.
Take some time to pray and meditate on the passage of scripture, but also on what the image of God means as a function.
Here at Marine Reach, we have a training program where the Bible is read and studied with the primary goal of discipleship. During this program called the Discipleship Bible School (DBS), we look at the whole Bible. If you have questions or want to learn more about the DBS, there is more information on our DBS page.
“Coming into prayer and passion I had so much passion and desires but did not know how to bring them to the feet of the Lord in prayer. Going through the journey of growing in prayer and discipline I was able to walk out with a passion and desire to take all that was on my heart to the foot of the cross in prayer. I found a love for that intimate time of prayer with the Lord in a way I haven’t known before!”
Beza Sparkes, 22, Ethiopia/Alaska
“My life used to be run by my fears, my struggles, and my failures. I had no way of fighting them because I didn’t know the truth. Over my time with YWAM and beyond, I have encountered so much freedom as God has shown me the truth of who He is in His Word. Dive into the Bible on Cover to Cover and watch God transform you as He begins to show you who He really is and who you were really made to be.”
David Souter, 22, England
“Coming into the medical compassion stream, I thought it would just be an addition to my medical experience. But after laying down my expectations I was able to grasp the essence of compassion through ministry, experiencing a new perspective on medicine. Choosing to serve in love, and taking the time to seek out and care for the one who need it most.”
Yekaterina Lukyanchina, 20, Russia/America
“Prayer and Passion completely changed my outlook on the true power that prayer has. It had always been something that I knew worked and I did, but it was boring. Being a part of this stream gave me new understanding of how prayer is worship and fuels the power of heaven connecting with earth. It will move you to a place of praying out of your relationship with the Lord rather than giving him a list of things you want. You will gain a newfound intimacy with God as your prayer life is propelled.”
Tilly Logan, 21, Australia
“Being part of the Go Pacific Stream really opened my eyes to experiencing and living in other cultures, particularly that of the Māori and South Pacific. Being able to be so relational with others, a key part of their culture, meant that we could witness God move in peoples’ lives on such a personal level, which has impacted me ever since. It also helped me discover my heart for evangelism, encouraged me to step out in faith, and stirred a passion to share the life-changing love of God I came to know during this time.”
Emma Sear, 19, England
“This is the craziest stream ever, not just doing fun activities, but the people I was with; they are wild as! Throughout the school, I’ve learned so much from the Bible that doing life with God and living my life on the edge is so much more interesting.”
Mun Hei, 21, Malaysia
“I’ve learn what the Kingdom means for us, how can we bring the Kingdom here and just share it with others… That makes me super excited! The key is to listen to God’s voice, seek His face and His presence! Everything else will be added as he promised is Matthew 6:33!”
Estera Welchar, 22, Poland
“Since being here at Marine Reach, my hunger for God has continued to grow more and more. In the Kingdom Come stream, our heart is to see the world changed by the message of His love and the demonstration of His power. It’s such a privilege to be apart of a group of people so on fire for Jesus!”
Joseph Pope, 25, Virginia, USA
“I decided to do a DBS because I wanted to know as much about the Bible as I could. And yes, I learned a lot about the Bible, the historical background and so on. But my biggest gain from the DBS was to learn and see the Bible come alive and active in my own life. The Bible used to be a boring book to me, with a bunch of unrelatable stories and letters. During DBS I got to know how to apply God’s Word to my life and how to be discipled, transformed and guided by it. My life changed so much through that and is still changing. I believe that’s what the Bible is for, to lead us closer to God and to help us to become more like Him.”
Silas Bauer, 22, Germany
“Reading the whole Bible was a real challenge for me, but it was so rewarding. My eyes were opened to the fact that Jesus had existed from the very beginning and that God’s gracious heart always was and is the same! I learned that the Bible isn’t just a story about God, but rather a story about imperfect, raw, real people. I know now that I am one of them, and that I can see God work in my life just like He did it with them!”
Jenny Fritz, 19, Germany
