How Do I Join YWAM?
How Do I Join YWAM?
Have you ever been interested in going into missions and wondered, “How do I join YWAM?” Well… it’s easy! Here at Marine Reach, we have three options for you if you are interested in joining YWAM for either short-term or long-term missions:
- Short-term mission opportunities
- Medical mission trips
- Long-term mission opportunities
Short Term Missions
A good way to get your foot in the door in YWAM is to become a Mission Builder. Mission Builders may not have done a YWAM DTS (Discipleship Training School) but are interested in serving and getting to know more about YWAM. You would likely be able to take a short amount of time (less than 3 months) to sow into our ministry. Mission Builders can serve in any of our other departments on the base that are not directly related to DTS for a few weeks to a few months. Don’t worry…if you decide you want to do a DTS, you can apply for a DTS at any time!
Contact us if you’re interested in Mission Building. We’ll let you know what opportunities are available to you, and we’ll find a good fit for you!
Medical Missions
If you are interested in going on a short-term medical missions trip, one of our sister ministries is the Family Care Centre (FCC) in Vanuatu. This incredible ministry was born out of Marine Reach’s vision to help disciple a nation and provides free quality medical and dental healthcare to Ni-vans (Vanuatu natives). The FCC also offers Discipleship Training Schools and other healthcare related training programs to equip the individual’s spiritual life and relationship with Jesus alongside the healthcare ministry.
Their incredible state of the art facility has brought love and hope to a nation in dire need, and this is an awesome opportunity to be Jesus’ hands and feet in the islands! If you have a medical qualification in nursing or dentistry or are looking to enter that field, a medical missions trip to Vanuatu is a great option for you! For more information, get in touch with the FCC staff on their contact page.
Long Term Missions
If you would like to join YWAM for long-term missions, the first thing to do is a Discipleship Training School (DTS). Marine Reach offers DTSs three times a year: January, July, and October. DTS is where you take 3 months to intentionally delve deeper into your relationship with the Lord and then go out into the community around New Zealand and abroad, for a 2-month outreach to bring the Gospel and love of God to the nations*. Check out what is DTS for more information.
Once you have completed your DTS you can then join any of our secondary schools and/or apply to become a Volunteer Staff. As you can imagine, there are many needs a base has to run effectively and smoothly. At Marine Reach, we have different departments: Training, Operations, Hospitality, Medical (through the FCC in Vanuatu), and Administration. When you become staff you will join one or more of these circles in an area where you are interested or where there is the biggest need.
Conclusion
At Marine Reach, we are a close-knit community that stands by the YWAM values and mission statement to know God and to make Him known. We have a passion for transformational discipleship, cultivating change in young peoples’ lives.
We value family and keeping Jesus at the centre of everything whether we are a DTS student, staffing a school, or serving in many of the other departments around the base. You should come and join this fun-loving community that brings transformation to each other, to the community, and to countries around the world.

*During the pandemic, outreaches have been within New Zealand and we have seen God touch many people’s lives within our own nation.
“For the past two years God has called me to go deeper in the word and not just let it be a surface level experience with Him. However I didn’t really have the tools, knowledge or understanding for how to go about this. God spoke to me months before I knew I would be able to do the DBS, during lockdown, that those who get into the word would see the face of Jesus. I am realizing that as I get into the word for hours a day with really helpful teachings to go alongside the readings, that is exactly what is happening. I am gaining such a deeper understanding of who God is and who I am, in relation to Him. There have been weeks where doing the homework assignments just completely wrecked me by seeing the love of God and in the moments of reflecting how God has moved so radically in my life. Even when I wasn’t walking closely with Him, He has always been drawing me back into a close relationship with Him by His love and mercy and grace.”
Anika Hochstedler, 26, New York
“In the Kingdom Come stream, we really focused on what the kingdom of God is and how to live that out on earth. The most impactful aspect of this was walking out a miraculous lifestyle and being in an intimate relationship with God, where you can expect miracles to happen.”
Peter Seip, 25, Virginia, USA
“Before DBS the Bible was a bit overwhelming to me and I wasn’t sure if I was capable of receiving understanding for myself; especially when it comes to the hard questions or more complex passages. After DBS, that questioning was stripped away and my relationship with my Heavenly Father has gone deeper than ever before.
DBS taught me how to see the Father heart of God. I learned to see God’s justice, faithfulness, and consistency from Genesis to Revelation. My life and relationship with Jesus will never be the same. When I read God’s Word it speaks loudly to me in full color. I cannot get enough of my Father’s words!! DBS equipped me to search out the scriptures for myself and empower me to share what I’ve learned with those around me. DBS was the sweetest time of my entire life.”
Amy Hulehan, 26, USA
“Being apart of Wild Heart has really helped me find out what it means to be wild for God. It has helped me break out of shells I didn’t even I know had. The stream transformed my way of thinking when it comes to being a disciple of Christ, teaching me to take action in faith. It has given me many things I will be able to take home and apply in my daily life, crazy awesome!”
Deylan Santy, 19, Idaho, USA
“SPHC is such an incredible gateway to seeing the world with God’s eyes. To see how His heart breaks at the brokenness of this world, and to see how the lack of education about little things such as germs and washing hands causes so much illness and suffering in the world, to then be equipped and sent to BRING THAT CHANGE! It is such a life changing/ perspective shifting program that has really changed my life!”
Antonio Wolfe, 20, Alberta, Canada
“Last year I decided to seek after God wholeheartedly and applied for the Pilgrimage DTS. Going on this journey (physically and spiritually) has been life-changing! Instead of wandering on my own, I am now following the Almighty God. I have rediscovered a personal and intimate relationship with my Creator!”
Tim Stallard, 26, Switzerland
“Doing SPHC was an amazing experience. Not only was I given the opportunity to continue to grow spiritually, but I learned things that can be used in a very practical and much needed way. SPHC gave me the opportunity to show the Father’s heart to people in a very unique way and love on the person in front of me while helping them in such a simple way.”
Karunia Been, 20, Portugal
“Before doing the Justice Movement stream I was so full of hatred and anger toward the perpetrators of human trafficking; completely lacking the love God has for them. But through the stream meetings and prayer it’s been a beautiful journey in which God has shown me how deep and vast His love is for ALL His children. God completely changed my view and I couldn’t be more thankful for this experience!”
Kara Spencer, 19, BC, Canada
“The Justice Movement Stream taught me to truly fall in love with and respect other cultures and people groups, and how to see them as God sees them.”
Kasandra Adler, 19, Missouri, USA
“Doing The Cover to Cover DTS at Marine Reach was one of the best things I’ve decided to do. Reading the Bible from Genesis to Revelation helped me see more of the different characteristics and nature of God. The Cover to Cover DTS was great. It taught me how to be diligent, manage my time properly, and helped me have a more sturdy foundation and in my beliefs. “
Talon Jernigan, 20, USA
